2017 Goals

Related image1.Connect with Old Friends It is so simple to shoot off a text, or have a quick call. Keeping these connections can be challenging and I slacked last year. So in 2017 I want to put some more mojo in and rekindle past friendships.

2. Be You. One of my biggest pet peeves about myself is that I care too much what other people think. Not sure tangible ways to improve upon this but going to consciously think about it more often.

3. Get Involved. I want to be more involved in my political party and in my community through volunteering. I can no longer just watch from the sidelines, I have to be an active participant and make my voice heard. I would love to start volunteering at Planned Parenthood this year.

4.Feed My Soul ( Literally) I am a foodie at heart. Food is truly a part of me and one of my greatest passions in life. This year I have two monthly goals. One is I want to  try a new restaurant in LA once a month , and not let the price point distinguish where I go. (I am known to be cheap). Splurge a little girl! The second is try a new dish that i have never made before-a la Julie and Julia movie.

5.More Fitness The best part about being unemployed was that I got to workout everyday. I felt my best, and loved the endorphins and became addicted. In 2017 I want to focus on how to incorporate working out with working a 9-5 job. Balance.

6. Explore LA It is so easy to stay in your bubble. However in 2017 I want to spend more time exploring different neighborhoods/beaches of LA. There is so much going on I want to take advantage of this amazing city. More museums, pop up shops and events, and festivals.

7. Stay Positive, Be Thankful, Be Kind Always.

2016 in review

2016 was one hell of a year to say the least. Two major things happened. I moved from SLC  to LA to June with no job, no life plan. Then I got a job, which I  really enjoy. Even though two very exciting things happened, it wasn’t all daisys and roses.  The first half of 2016 was actually very difficult. I was a college graduate who was jobless.

After graduating in 2015 ,I was physically and emotionally burnt out. I  came off of a unpaid 3 month rigorous  internship  experience and moved back home to my small town in Utah. I thought, I will spend a couple months relaxing, and then magically get my dream job. However that didn’t happen, and reality sunk in. The toughness of the job industry was something I always heard about through the grapevine, or saw in the media. But I never actually stopped to think that it would happen to me. And it did, hard.

Looking for jobs became excruciating. I cried a lot in 2016. I felt like a failure and that I wasted my very expensive out of state degree from University of Oregon because I couldn’t get hired. It felt like everything I tried wasn’t working.  Getting no responses to my applications was bone crushing. I questioned myself and was embarrassed about being unemployed.  The thing that was most frustrating is I knew I had the skillset. I am smart, dedicated, and passionate. I was upset at the world and how tough finding a job actually was.

Stuck in my situation, something needed to change. So in June 2016 I spontaneously moved to LA to live with my 84 year old grandpa and strictly look for jobs in the southern California region. I packed my Toyota Corolla and made the move down. A new environment and change of scenery was good for my motivation and drive. I had a newfound momentum and positive energy about my situation. I must have applied to over 300 jobs, had countless phone interviews, and multiple in person interviews.

After months and months of hard work and persistence, my dedication and commitment paid off. Long story short,  eventually I landed a job that I am really excited about.  It challenges me in ways I didn’t think were possible and my boss and coworkers are awesome! In the end, it all worked out.

With only a couple of days left in 2016, I feel like I am finally starting my life as an adult. Moving to LA has been a whirlwind. I fell in love with the LA fitness community, explored LA  mainly through my tastebuds, and connected with extended family. As I reflect on 2016, I realize failure is important for growth. I wish I could have told my past self to never doubt yourself. As 2016 comes to a close I am so thankful for friends and family that have supported me and cheered me on! Cheers to new adventures!

2017 I am ready for you!

Sephora Play August 2016 Review

Even though the August box was just alright, I still enjoy subscribing to the Sephora boxes. I love testing out new products and getting a surprise every month. This months theme was “eye openers”, which i thought was clever and different to curate a box all around one feature. There was also a great balance of products: 2 skincare, 3 makeup 1 fragrance.

Lancôme Énergie de Vie The Smoothing & Glow Boosting Liquid Moisturizer– this moisturizer surprised me. I have never used a liquid moisturizer before and thought I would not like it. However, I enjoyed how fast it absorbed into the skin. I did notice a slight “glow”so would recommend using this product in your morning routine.

Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm-I have heard nothing but rave reviews about this luxury skincare brand and was excited to test it out. The cream formula felt weightless and hydrating under the eyes. I don’t notice much of a difference but know that over time eye cream helps.

CLEAN Reserve Warm Cotton- This smells like fresh laundry to me. It is totally unexpected and unique. I like that it is not too in your face or too bold. A nice fragrance for running errands or jetting out the door. I like it but not sure I would splurge the 90$ for this.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Shadow Eye shadow– Haven’t worn this yet.  I usually stick to matte neutrals for my eye shadow. I need to get out of my comfort zone and try to make this shade wearable.

SEPHORA COLLECTION Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof– I got a pretty purple shade called love affair. Although I have only used it once, It is  very  pigmented and creamy. But eyeliner is not something I use in my everyday makeup routine and if I do use it-it is typically black.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara- I really am not picky about mascara so this was nothing special. Would have much preferred a different sample-But I do love Urban Decay so am expecting this to work well.

You are a BadAss by Jen Sincero Book

I’ve already recommended this book to three of my friends-it is that good. Highly recommend giving it a look or renting it from your local library. Some of the quotes are so accurate. It doesn’t feel like a self help book but more of common ideas everyone should live by. It is a very easy read and has digestible ideas.

Slow transitions into Fall

I am not going to lie, I was dreading Fall and the change of seasons. I adore everything about summer. However I am slowly getting excited about all Fall has to offer. I am not ready for the freight train of pumpkin spice to slam into me. But I am enjoying little touches of fall. Like a new black pouf key chain, dark blue nails, and even an adorable black and brown dot shirt I picked up from H&M. Also I am excited to start cooking in the oven on cooler nights.

Sometimes I forget how great podcasts are. I usually listen to them at home, but am going to subscribe to a couple of my favorites for those times when I am stuck in traffic. Two have stood out this past week. The first is Fat Mascara. Fat Mascara is a beauty podcast with hosts Jessica Matlin (Teen Vouge) and Jennifer Goldstein (Marie Claire). They usually talk about a couple beauty trends or “hot topics” and then have a guest on. These girls know their stuff. The second is the Jenna and Julien Podcast. I just find them both hysterical and easy to listen to. If you have any recommendations, no matter the topic, shoot them my way.

Desktop Backgrounds

A graphic design nerd at heart, I enjoy having different desktop backgrounds on my computer. I especially like motivational quote ones. This one is currently on my desktop and is from a stationary company called Made for Retail. If you sign up for their newsletter, you get new ones sent to your inbox. Dawn Nicole Designs has nice ones, as well as Lemon and Thistle.

Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Cups

These are seriously addicting and it is so hard just to have one or two. Dangerous. One of my favorite chocolate finds at Trader Joe’s-but then again all of their chocolate is yummy.

August 2016 Favorites

Currently Reading: Turbulence By Whitney G. I love a good steamy romance novel, and this one, that was recommended by Black Heart Reviews , fits the bill. I enjoyed the characters and the setting of a flight attendant/pilot and the surprising twist at the end.

Current beauty addiction:  Bite Multisticks. I was sent these to test out for free by Influenster but I honestly am already ADDICTED to them. They are a cream stick that can be used as an eyeshadow, blush/contour, or lipstick. They are so creamy, easy to blend, and the perfect lazy girl product. Their formula is very unique too. I am already on the hunt to buy a new shade.

Currently eating out: The best meal I had out this past month was at Spartina on Melrose.  I met my friend who was visiting from San Francisco for the day and we ended up randomly finding this cute restaurant. I got the pork shoulder ragu, a glass of rose, and split a  “chocolate bongo” dessert ( chocolate sorbet sandwiched between a profiterole and drizzeled with chocolate glaze) .

Current workout: WundaBar Pilates. I rarely have taken from the same instructor twice and all of the classes are so different and unique (In a good way). Some are more yoga based, other are calorie burners, and some use the pilates reformer more than others.

Currently Drinking: Tea! I am kind of in tea mode. Earl Grey has been my jam. But also Good Earth, and a new one from Trader Joe’s- ginger turmeric!

Current purchase:  I treated myself to two workout tops by Nancy Rose Performance  that were on sale for $15 each from The Bar Method Pasadena’s 15th birthday celebration. They both have built in sports bras and are super comfortable.

Currently Cooking: It doesn’t matter that the temperature is warm out, I had a craving for soup. I made this recipe for Chicken Tortilla Soup from Averie Cooks twice this past month–it was that good. Basically you just throw everything in a large pot and let it simmer for a good 20 minutes!

Currently Watching: Real Housewives of New York Reunion. Bravo TV should be a religion. I seriously love so many of their shows and Andy Cohen is one of my favorite Celebrity personalities. RHONY is the best guilty pleasure.

Pilates Plus Silver Lake // Class Pass LA

Pilates Plus Silver Lake

  • Location: Hyperion Plaza, 2630 Hyperion Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027
  • Type:Pilates
  • Bring: Sticky Socks

Although a challenging class, unfortunately I would not go back to Pilates Plus Silver Lake. The studio was not clean, the instructor not very welcoming, and the workout was just okay.

Workout: Pilates Plus uses the Lagree fitness Pilates machines. I am familiar with them, and love the difficulty of them. However the class was nothing special. I was recovering from an inner thigh strain (I know so weird/awkward) and this class had a ton of inner/thigh leg work. Mainly the instructor just said what to do once and then said nothing in between.

Vibe: Honestly the studio felt a little dirty. Compared to other Pilates studios I go to, which are usually Beautifully and artistically designed, this one felt cramped, dirty, and not very upscale. This is one of the main reasons I would not go back (because I can take a similar Lagree Pilates class elsewhere with a friendlier environment)

Parking: AWFUL! I had such a hard time finding parking (granted I did go to an after work 6 PM class), got stuck in traffic, and had to walk blocks to get to the studio.

The Night Of

Image result for the night of

Christina from Hungry Meets Healthy recently recommended this TV on her blog. It looked right up my alley. I binge watched all six episodes last Friday night. I loved the suspense, and the characters are wonderful. It reflects life in American prisons, is a social commentary on race and minorities, as well as being  a murder mystery. If you liked season 1 of Serial podcast, I think you would like this. There are only 8 episodes in this HBO mini series, and the finale airs this weekend!

Article on Indecisiveness-Read Here

I am the most indecisive person. My quality of not be able to decide on things, is one of my least favorite traits about myself. Whether it comes to shopping for sweaters, picking a workout class on Class Pass, and especially anything related to food or meal choices. It is always something on the back on my brain that I need to work on. This Fast Company.com article  on decision making just spoke to me, and I am going to check out the book mentioned in the article at my library.

Hak’s Packs-One Pot Cooking Sauce

I got this Thai Green curry sauce packet for free when I attended Brunch Con La last weekend. Crafted by celebrity chef Sharone Hakman, they are essentially pre-made sauce packets that can be used as marinades, poaching liquids, or stir-frys( like I did). I sauteed some green beans, onions, zucchini, and chicken in olive oil first then added the sauce packet and served it over brown rice! The flavor on this was phenomenal packed full of ginger and curry. It was also a very easy dinner and took less than 30 minutes. I also bought a second one-Rustic Ratatouille at TJMAXX for $2.29( more boring than the first, but still good)

I just bought a phone case that is in a classic marbled design. But didn’t stop there because I also purchased some flat note cards that are marbled. And am debating buying a new laptop cover in the same print. Am I crazy? Probably. I just love the simple modern look of it.

Note cards

I am a stationary hoarder. I love all types of to do lists, fancy pens, planners, and sticky notes. It just makes me really happy. Some of my favorite stationary purchases are note cards; and I really do enjoy writing letters. The target dollar spot and TJ MAXX are some of my favorite places to find cute stationary.
